This was huge because we made the same mistake twice and if we didnt, we would not have been so deep in the loss. This means money lost value causing many to become homeless and many to commit suicide because of the fear of the world ending. The places the homeless lived and the things they used were called hoovervilles or started with hoover because they were separated at the time by how much money you had. The things they used where named after the president of that time period. Hoover was the president during the time and did a lot to help get everyone through the horrible time period that the great depression was. He used the newly created tv to reach citizens of america with his fireside chats to where he would talk to them about stocks and make it better for the people and to keep their minds off what was happening. Many would look up to him and be so happy when he would come on the black and white screen. He was one of the forms of entertainment at the time. The people need something cheap and fun to do so they started playing card games listening to the radio and watching the tv if they had one. Monopoly was a game that came out during the time and it was a huge hit. The people liked the feel of being able to control things and liked the feel of having more money than in real life. Some stories that came out where also a hit like the three little pigs and the wizard of oz. There was one special storie out of all the rest it was one of a farmer. The story is that a farmer couldnt afford feed for his sheep so instead of watching them starve he slit their throats and sold the fur and ate them for the next month so he didnt starve also like the sheep wouldve. This story was famous because it meant something and everyone thought it was relatable to what was going on at the time. The great depression is a miraculous thing of how we didnt see it coming. My theory is that we saw it coming but were so bluntly dumb that we didnt see it or they just shrugged it off. They spent all there money on stock when it was falling because they wanted to make money but instead they just lost it all and suffered from it. This caused much tragedy and caused homeless to have to go to desperate measures. Many believe that during the great depression the homeless had their own language called the hobo indenginess language this was the way they wrote things to show who lives here and what building is this and they would have hung above there tents. This was a smart idea for newcomers to the hooverville. They could also use normal writing but i get how they used that to save on ink. Money saving was the way you had to live during the great depression. If you found a penny on the street you keep (this was rare because a penny was like a dollar now) they had to buy something and make the most out of it. You kept the shoes you had from the 3rd grade to give to someone else for a few cents. This was the way they had to live during the time and it was horrible. Back then you could buy a hotel room and breakfast for a day for 6 cents which isnt alot in todays current economy. The money in todays economy is fifteen times what it was back then. So you could get a coke for a dollar then but now days it would be fifteen dollars. This is a incredible thing and shows how much the world has changed. And means if you found a penny back then you found fifteen of them. Back then they tried to change the way we count money. During the great depression they tried to change the fact that one cent is one cent. They also tried to do a fraction of a cent or a fraction of a dollar other than just it being one coin. This is a crazy thought because what would you do if you needed a penny but only had a few quarters of one. In conclusion the great depression was a very bad time period. The stock crashed making money lesser valued. The suicide rates jumped and many had no jobs. In my mind I think it could have been avoided but hey thats just a theory. The president turned corrupt and everything went wrong with the economy. But thats what the great depression was just everything going wrong.

Evaluating Historical Theories There are a number of historical theories in counseling which have been used to assist clients during the counseling process. This week’s readings provided quite a few concepts from counseling theories which were valuable and interesting to me. Many coincided with my views on the reasons for people’s behavior and human nature. These concepts are also meaningful to me for various reasons. Each of these psychological concepts might be useful when having a counseling relationship with a client in a variety of ways. Transference Transference is defined as the unconscious process where emotions that are associated with one person, such as a parent, unconsciously shift to another person, especially to the counselor (Transference, 2012). These feelings can be hostile, affectionate or ambivalent (Transference, 2012). This concept is interesting and meaningful to me because now that I think about it, many people take issues or things that occurred previously out on counselors or others who are presently trying to help them. According to the text the release of these feelings is therapeutic due to providing an emotional release, however the real benefit lies in client’s increased self-knowledge (Gladding, 2005). I think people develop problems regarding coping with life due to transference. Many advances in medicine and in the understanding of how organisms function have been the direct result of animal experimentation. Concern over the welfare of laboratory animals is also not new, as reflected in the activities of various animal welfare and antivivisectionist groups dating back to the nineteenth century. This concern has led to laws and regulations governing the use of animals in research and to various guides and statements of principle designed to ensure humane treatment and use of laboratory animals. This does not mean a merger wave will automatically roll through the industry; mergers routinely collapse over issues of price, management egos and other factors. But every oil company is at least going over its options now that Exxon and Mobil, the two biggest players in the U.S. oil industry, are joining to create an awesome competitor. To be sure, other possible pairings in the oil patch are just speculation for now, and the companies themselves arent commenting. But attention is shifting to the likes of Texaco, headquartered in White Plains, N.Y., and San Francisco-based Chevron Corp.the nations third- and fourth-largest oil companies, respectivelyas potential buyers. They are likely to consider buying smaller rivals because most of their peers are now spoken for, namely Exxon, Mobil and Amoco. Yet it is also possible that some of those smaller rivals might pair up to bolster their positions. The difference between appearance and reality comes into affect. First, Mr. Radley tells Jem and Scout that he cemented the tree because it was sick when it was not. Secondly, Jem realized that Mr. Radley had lied just to keep Boo from having any friends from the outside world. Harper Lee uses irony when Aunt Alexandra hosts the missionary circle.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The ladies that attended Aunt Alexandra's missionary circle acted as hypocrites. She says, '...I made a pledge in my heart. I said to myself, when I go home I'm going to give a course on the Mrunas and bring J. Grimes Everett's message to Maycomb...'; (pg. 233-234). The are speaking with compassion of neglected Blacks somewhere in Africa while treating the Negroes that live in and around Maycomb with very little respect. Later in the conversation Mrs. Merriweather tells Scout, 'Out there in J. Grimes Everett's land there's nothing but sin and squalor'; (pg. 234). Harper Lee was showing us the difference between appearance and reality at the missionary circle. The ladies feel sorry for the Blacks in Africa but not the ones in Maycomb. They are both black, what difference does it make where they live? All the Blacks in Maycomb country are being prejudiced against by all the whites. Frederick Douglass One Pager Essay

Life comes with many obstacles. Overcoming these barriers requires a set mind and perseverance. Slave-born abolitionist speaker Frederick Douglass, in his autobiography The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass depicts his life as a slave and his experiences to show to evil in slavery. His story explains how he changed and what he accomplished throughout his life. This slave narrative illustrates the young slave’s struggle to free himself from the mental and physical traumas tied with slavery. On the visual, the rock wall represents a difficult barrier (or many barriers) one must overcome to achieve greatness. Frederick Douglass went through the pains of being a slave to criticisms and harsh judgments to achieve what he saw morally right. The quote reads, â€Å"In coming to a fixed destination to run away, we did more than Patrick Henry, when he resolved upon liberty or death.† Douglass says this to show his comparison in the evils of slavery and death, and that sometimes he saw slavery as worse than death. He, nor could any slave, settle for death. They fought until the end for freedom and rights. Douglass educated himself to become one of the most intellectual and influential speakers for the American Anti-Slavery Society. While reading this narrative, I gained a deeper comprehension of the lives of slaves and the hardships they faced. It also made me realize that everyone starts at the bottom of the rock wall and that each person must climb it to prove his or her worth in the world. Whether one is born into a wealthy or poor family, he or she has to earn the respect they deserve.
